April 2-3

San Francisco

Pacific Energy Center (Board Room)

This two-day workshop assumes substantial prior experience and knowledge of WUFI and THERM software.

Instructors: Prudence Ferreira and Graham Irwin
Prudence and Graham are both experienced Certified Passive House Consultants and PHIUS CPHC instructors.

Hosted by: The Passive House Alliance SF Chapter

Space is limited!

WUFI Segment Overview

This portion of the workshop will focus on hygrothermal results analysis and Passive House assemblies. We will begin with a very brief review of the physics behind WUFI as pertinent to understanding its outputs. Hands-on Passive House assembly construction and in-depth results analysis will follow. Assembly construction and results interpretation will focus on using WUFI as a problem-solving tool and comparative analysis tool.

THERM Segment Overview

  1. The THERM portion of the workshop will teach a methodology of calculating thermal bridges (using THERM and Excel) for use in the PHPP.  Topics include:

  2. Use of a theoretical approach to thermal bridging in regards to Passive Houses and the PHPP

  3. Use of a thermal bridge protocol and calculator

  4. Overview of THERM software - inputs and outputs

  5. Example exercises of various building envelope connections

  6. Optimization exercises of various details

  7. Unique cases: windows and doors, point thermal bridges, varying ground plane conditions

Technology Requirements

Trainees must supply their own laptops, and must install two pieces of free software before class. These programs are compatible with Windows only.

Mac users need to purchase and install VMWare Fusion, Bootcamp or Parallels, along with a Windows operating system. VMWare Fusion is recommended.

The two programs to install are THERM and WUFI:

THERM Version 6.3 is the most stable version: There are additional updates that continuously come out under the heading of THERM 6.3.  It gives users the ability to download THERM 6.3.30 or THERM 6.3.19.  THERM 6.3.19 is the stable version and is the NFRC Certified Version.  THERM 6.3.30 is the Latest Version, but is not as stable for Passive House modeling.  THERM 6.3.30 gives a "ConRad" Error based on the boundary conditions created.

There are two methods for fixing the error.

Method 1:

  1. Install THERM 6.3.19

Method 2:

  1. Install THERM 6.3.30

  2. Download the Conrad.dll file Version 6.3.1.0

  3. Go the folder location where the files are installed (For Windows7 and Vista: Computer/C:/Program Files (x86)/lbnl/THERM6).

  4. Copy the downloaded file and overwrite the current conrad.dll file.

  5. Calculate the Passive House detail you are interested in!
